This chart doesn’t give the vast amount of 308 rifles justice. This chart only contains a small amount of the thousands of possible choices for rifles. I chose these rifles because I believe that they all bring something different to the table, and hopefully It will give everyone some information and help them make their decision.
What is a .308 Rifle?
For many experienced gun enthusiasts the term may seem very familiar, but to many else it may sound like a different language. Most novice marksmen .308 may sound like a specific gun model, but in reality it is the caliber of bullet that is fired by .308 rifles. So .308 ammunition is fired by .308 rifles, hence the name. Now the uses of a 308 rifle may vary for everyone, but generally they are used for either target practice or hunting. Now of course you can use it for other means, but that is generally what they are manufactured for.
Which Rifle Do You Need?
Depending on your needs the rifle you need will be different. If you are looking for a rifle for distance shooting than obviously you want a lower twist rate. If you want more accuracy than obviously you want a more powerful rifle with a longer barrel, a scope, and a low twist rate. If you are looking for a hunting rifle you obviously want an accurate rifle that also is reliable and durable. Along with that it needs to be portable. Before you buy, make sure you have a mental checklist based on what you need your rifle for and what rifle can fulfill those needs.
I suggest you look at the comparative chart and it will help you make an educated decision.
Reviews Of My Top 5 .308 Rifles
These reviews aren‘t based solely on the ratings in the chart above, these are rifles that I personally have used and I believe are all around rifles that everyone should take a look at.
1. REMINGTON 700 MILSPEC 308 SS 24″ 5-R BARREL
This is a fabulous rifle, it is designed specifically for long range shooting. With a price at $1179.99 it is a higher standard of rifle but I believe that it is worth it. With a 24 inch barrel and a 1 in 11.25 twist rate this gun has the potential to shoot targets accurately six hundred plus yards away. This rifle has a good rate of fire with a 5 round magazine.
This rifle is manufactured by Remington who have one of the best in the business since they opened up in 1816. Remington has been around for nearly 200 hundred years and they are very reliable and their customer service is outstanding. I believe this rifle is the right pick for anyone who wants to invest in a long distance rifle.
2. Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle
Ruger has jumped into the .308 rifle game with their release, the Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle. This gun has taken the place of the 1903 springfield with it’s new sleek profile and compact profile. This gun has few advantages over the old 1903 Springfield which include the smaller more compact profile, a new and improved 10 round magSzine, increased distance and accuracy. This gun has a 16.5 inch barrel which is great for maneuverability and the twist rate is 1 in 10 which increases its accuracy.
This gun is currently priced at $899.99 which makes it a great gun for a more modest price. I believe this gun can be used for pretty much anything, but it shines at medium range target shooting, and the 10 round magazine really helps out with this.
3. POF P308 T RAIL .308 14.5″ W/MUZZLE BRAKE
This is one of the most advanced rifles known to date. This semi-automatic rifle manufactured by Patriot Ordnance Factory as predominately a target gun or self defense rifle. This rifle is gas piston powered with a 25 round magazine for a great rate of fire. This rifle has an accurate range of over 400 yards. The 16 inch barrel helps to make it more compact and easier to carry around. Although this rifle currently costs $3319.99 this is the best rifle I have ever used. Along with the 16 inch barrel, a muzzle brake is included to help reduce the recoil and make your shots more accurate when shooting rapidly.
4. MOSSBERG 100 ATR SCOPED COMBO
Mossberg 100 ATR is my choice for a novices first rifle or anyone else who wants a cheap but effective rifle. The 100 ATR is currently only $322.99. This rifle is a short action bolt action rifle with a free-floating barrel. On top of the rifle there is pre-installed rails for optics and pre-installed iron sights. The 100 ATR costs less than half of what most other .308 rifles cost.
With a 22 inch barrel and a 1 in 10 twist rate this rifle has a good maximum distance with a very tight accuracy for shooting. I suggest this gun for anyone that is trying to get their foot in the door of rifle shooting.
5. PTR91 KF LE CARBINE
This is another great .308 assault rifle. The current price is $1299.99, so it is reasonable priced for an AR. This AR is made with a short recoil mechanism and comes with a 20 round magazine. The special thing about this barrel is that it comes with a pre-ban flash hider. I suggest you use this rifle for target shooting as the twist rate is 1 in 12 which means that the accuracy is outstanding. If you are looking for your first AR, I suggest either this or the POF P308 T RAIL .308.
